Port of Call – Stockholm

Posted on September 26, 2022September 26, 2022

On our last Baltic Cruise in 2014 we were unable to stop at the port in Stockholm due to a storm.  We spent the day at sea instead and I spent the day dealing with my first real case of sea sickness.  It didn’t stop me from cruising and my desire to visit this Scandinavian city has been growing ever since.

This Baltic itinerary offered an overnight in Stockholm before embarking on a 12 day cruise.  There was originally another stop in Russia which was canceled even before the cruise line canceled St.  Petersburg.  The extra day was given to Stockholm.  Although many cruisers plan to arrive at their embarkation port in advance in order to have time in the departure city we were able to arrive on the first day, stay overnight on the ship, and still have time to tour Stockholm.  A combination of the extra time and the cost savings of a hotel and meal was a real bonus.

We chose to book the Hop On Hop Off bus to start our day and spent the first half exploring the city before getting off at the Royal Palace.  This was one of the most beautiful royal residences we have ever toured, and I love castles.  Still in use by the Monarchy of Sweden this residence, workplace and museum in the centre of the city offers numerous fully furnished rooms to explore, including the Royal Apartments and a couple of museums.

Afterwards we hung out in the courtyard to watch the Changing of the Guards.  The pageantry, mounted procession and band offered an insight into the pride and long traditions of the Monarchy of Sweden. For more information on tickets and hours please visit https://www.kungligaslotten.se/english/royal-palaces-and-sites/the-royal-palace.html.

Crossing the street from the Palace to the waterfront we jumped on a one hour narrated tour of the harbour.  Experience has taught us that great port cities need to be viewed from their waterfront in order to truly appreciate their history and modern development.  Stockholm is dotted with numerous small islands, each with a purpose whether it was as a defense position its its early years to the site of Grona Lund, a family friendly amusement park that was the must see destination for many of the families on board.  For more information see its website at https://www.gronalund.com/en.

After our harbour tour we finished the Hop On Hop off loop arriving back at the cruise port in time for the sail away.  I would encourage everyone with a sail away out of Stockholm to spend time on deck.  The archipelagos offered a breathtaking view of the natural beauty of Sweden and should not be missed.
