We spend a lot of our time focusing on the things to see and do when you hit shore, but a cruise is more than just the sum of its ports. When you choose a cruise predominately for the adventure and exploration you tend to overlook the best part of a cruise vacation – being on a cruise ship.
Each evening you will find a newsletter in your stateroom outlining the planned events for the next day. Sea days are jam packed with options designed to engage every type of traveller. Highlight the ones that appeal to you and plan your day. Many of these options are very popular so be sure to arrive early to get a seat.
On some ships the passengers can request events and the ship will try to accommodate as long as there is a venue and someone to oversee the event. On our last cruise the crocheting and knitting circles were very popular, as was the Sudoku tables.
Sea days also offer a number of onboard activities that entice passengers to spend money. The spas, duty free shops and casinos are open round the clock and can be tempting options. Just be aware of your budget and spend time and money accordingly.
Depending on how you like to spend your leisure time here are the best categories of things to do when you are at sea;
- Take it easy
Although a nap is top of our list on sea days I always worry about what other fun we may be missing. Perhaps take it easy on a lounge chair around the pool deck or find quiet time and a good book in the library. Most ships have lending libraries and welcome the donation of the novel you have just finished to their collection. Explore the ship to find your quiet place to unwind and relax, update your journal or send emails home.
- Get competitive
Sea days are the best time to participate in the games offered by the cruise staff. Whether you plan to enter the “sexy legs” contest at the pool or a competitive game of trivia in the pub there are lots of ways to play the day away. Couple challenges are very popular, as are family focused games and events. Watch for sporting events such as putting contests or shuffle board competitions. If you are not the competitive type, just stop by to watch. It can be hilarious!
- Be entertained
Pass an afternoon with a movie, often streamed in the main atrium or on the giant outdoor screens. These are very popular for families looking to distract overstimulated children. Check out the Broadway style shows offered in the evening or dance the night away to your favourite style of music.
- Get an education
Many cruise ships offer interesting and engaging presentations or lectures on everything from the Captain and Crew Question Period to shore excursions or planning your next cruise to art history or learning common phrases from a new language. Dance lessons or yoga classes are popular ways to be entertained and get a physical workout at the same time. Be aware of the seminars designed to sell onboard services such as spa treatment or services. Not that there is anything wrong with that, just be aware and budget accordingly. Some lectures may be hosted by third parties who offer unique topics and perspectives.
To combine your education with your entertainment try a wine, whiskey, beer or martini tasting. These require an additional charge but can be quite enlightening.
- Eat something new
Sea days are great occasions for specialty dining or trying the complimentary dining rooms for a special breakfast or lunch. Be sure to make advance reservations for the popular specialty restaurants, even before you set sail, to ensure you get the time and day you want.
Most importantly take the time on a sea day to get to know your fellow passengers. Perhaps you shared an excursion with a fun couple you later run into at trivia, or invite them to join you for lunch. Start a conversation with a complete stranger who just looks interesting. I guarantee it will be the best part of any day.
Once you get adept at planning and enjoying your days at sea you will count those as important as the ports when selecting an itinerary.
