It’s easy to block the memory of the discomforts you experience when the outcome of the event is worth it. In this case I am talking about long haul flights, although the sentiment may be applied to a number of other experiences. As we continue to explore new and exciting destinations around the globe, our concern has evolved from how much the flights will cost, to how long they will take.
On our recent trip to Europe we tried a few recommendations from others, and they really did work. So here are our top 5 suggestions to be make your next long haul flight slightly better.
- Wear comfortable clothing.
Loose fitting clothing, layers that can be easily shed or pulled back on, and easy slip on shoes are all essentials. There is a fair amount of walking required in major airports, some more than others, so you do not want to be wearing uncomfortable shoes. Since your feet can swell during the flight being able to remove shoes or even loosen your laces will help. Easy to slip back on is also important for a quick trip to the restroom or when the plane lands and everyone is anxious to get off. Wearing a loose fitting outfit that does not restrict means that you can move easier and not have to endure being restrained or pinched by your clothes in a small space while having to sit for long periods of time. Some planes can be hot and others freezing, so layers will work well to help modulate body temperature.
- Bring your own food.
Not to sound like a bad comic, but airplane food! Am I right! If you want to avoid the in-flight meals and the expense of buying food at the airport bring your own from home. I had no idea this was allowed until recently but a quick search of the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority website outlines what you can and cannot bring on a plane. Solid foods such as fresh fruit, vegetables, sandwiches and snacks are allowed. Mashed or pureed food, or anything in a sauce (such as stew or chili) is not allowed. You can also bring your own water bottle, empty, in your carry on and fill it in the airport. Regulations may differ at your destination so we would recommend just bringing enough for the flight.
- Bring something to entertain yourself
Many flights now offer in flight movies and other entertainment, but not all, so take some time to download the movies, music or podcasts that you like to your own device. I would suggest bringing your own set of earphones as well so you don’t have to buy a pair or use ones that are subpar. Books, puzzles and cards are also a fun way to pass the time. If you are travelling with children they should have their own bag of snacks and activities to occupy them. The Dollar Store is great for that! If sleep is your go to activity while flying then be sure to pack your neck pillow and noise-canceling head phones. A good sleep mask will also help. If you are taking a red eye flight getting some sleep is essential to avoid jet lag on your vacation.
- Consider your personal care
Get up and walk around on a regular basis to stretch your legs and back muscles. Securing aisle seats helps in case you are reluctant to bother your seat mates. Keep hydrated. The bottle of water you bring from the airport is essential in this regard so you are not dependent on the attendants coming around. Be sure to pack medications and vitamins into your carry on luggage so that you can take them when regularly scheduled. Slip some moisturizer, toothbrush and tooth paste, and wet wipes into your back pack for a quick refresher before and after meals and before you land. A hairbrush or comb is also a great idea. Taking care of yourself means you will land invigorated and feeling less icky after a long flight. On a separate note please watch how much fragrance you use out of respect for the others close by who may be sensitive to scents.
- Pack a carry-on and personal piece of luggage only
Not everyone has embraced this way of travel yet but I do encourage you to try. There are a variety of reasons why we mention it, the least of which is the possibility of lost luggage, especially on connecting flights. You will be amazed at how much you can pack into a 22” x 14” x 9” suitcase and a back pack. Also the prospect of waiting around for your luggage to arrive after hours on board a plane is demoralizing. Search ahead for laundry facilities; on your cruise, at your hotel or Airbnb, even in the neighbourhood close by. You can even bring travel detergent to rinse out your delicates in your room. You will be more nimble and flexible and it is easier to get into public transit, saving money on expensive taxis.
There are many facets involved in planning an enjoyable travel adventure. Making sure the flights there and back, while maybe not enjoyable, can be less burdensome.
