On a recent cruise with NCL we attended a presentation offered by the cruise consultant on board about how to book the perfect cruise at the best price available. Whether or not you use NCL or another line these tips are worth considering.
- Choose a ship that meets your needs
Bigger ships are great for family or multi-generational cruises as they offer perks like water parks, race tracks, laser tag and/or a ropes course. Smaller ships are cozy and quieter, and offer longer itineraries to more exotic destinations.
- Pick the right time of year
Family vacations are often booked during holidays and school vacations. As a result these itineraries are more expensive and rarely go on sale. They are usually shorter, many no more than 7-9 days. Longer itineraries and open ended cruises (one that end in a different port then they leave from) are cheapest, available in the off season and will attract mature cruisers more so than families.
- Book the perfect room for you
Many lines now offer solo studios for single travelers. They are generally cheaper than paying for double occupancy and can offer common space reserved for the solo travelers only. Inside rooms are the cheapest, followed by ocean view, balcony and suites. The amount of space and daylight are the two deciding factors there. Each ship also have accessible rooms but these are limited, so book them at least 9 – 12 months in advance to ensure you get one. Before booking check the deck plans for whats above and below to avoid venue noise. Also be careful if you take a guaranteed room or bid on an upgrade as what you get may not be what you want.
- Loyalty does have its rewards
Build up loyalty points by sailing with the same line regularly and you will get perks with every cruise. It may be specialty dining, drinks packages, WiFi minutes, free laundry, or more. Each line has its own loyalty program but generally points are earned each night you sail. Check into the options to earn extra points; such as when you book certain suites, promotional cruises, back to back cruises and past guest offers.
- Rewarding Veterans
Check as well for special programs that reward veterans (or front line workers such as nurses and teachers). Some lines give discounts, offer special programs and recognition events.
- Book a Group
If you are planning to travel with the whole family, or just a bunch of friends, consider having one person book it as a group. When you book five (5) or more cabins with NCL you get some extra perks, discounts and onboard credits. If this is given to the group concierge only make sure they share. A group dinner at a specialty restaurant is a great option.
Whether you use a travel agent, a cruise consultant or book yourself these are all important considerations, next of course to whichever amazing itinerary you choose.
