Boomers (those born between 1946 and 1964) are brand loyal. As a result they are more likely to put the time and effort into a reward program and to stick with their brand as a result. I know we do.
These days so many organizations offer loyalty reward programs, from your local grocery store to your favourite cruise line. It can be overwhelming to remember to swipe, collect and apply your points on all of the perks available. With others it is almost impossible to reach any level of viable reward as it is not something you purchase or use on a regular basis. As a result you have to really focus on the ones that you find the most valuable.
Knowing this has become an important marketing tool for a number of companies, giving rise to Status Match programs. MSC Cruise Lines is one such example. As the new kid on the mass market cruise block and wishing to appeal to North American cruisers as they forged their way into the Caribbean and Alaskan markets it seems a no brainer that they offer an easy to apply for Status Match program.
We decided to put it to the test in order to book an MSC Cruise. The application is found online and easy to fill out. It does require a copy of a statement or recent cruise card as proof. I received an answer the very next day and they matched our Sapphire status with NCL Cruise Lines to their Gold. Just a note if you have travelling with a partner they need to match as well so requires two separate applications. MSC will offer some kind of match for practically every cruise line and hotel rewards program.
Other cruise lines are following suit, such as Virgin Voyages. According to their website “If you have loyalty status with another cruise line or select Virgin travel brands, we’ll match it and fast-track you into the Sailing Club so you can experience all the excitement for yourself”.
Royal Caribbean “will allow members of Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, and Silversea’s programs to enjoy reciprocal status regardless of which brand they sail with”, according to their blog. This is seen as a great opportunity for loyalists to enjoy all levels of one line; mass market, premium and luxury. It is hoped that other cruise lines will follow.
Carnival Cruise Lines is taking a different approach. According to their website “If you upload proof of your casino loyalty program status to Carnival’s website, you may receive an offer for a free cruise in return.” They recommend matching as many casino programs as you are part of in order to demonstrate “that you’re a loyal customer and have the potential to gamble, even if you’ve never really gambled before or have no interest in it.”
Many hotel chains and airlines will status match as well. Check their websites for more information. This can impact your overall travel experience by making it more budget friendly with all the perks you care to enjoy.
