I love to travel solo. There’s nothing more exhilarating than the freedom of discovering new places and people at your own speed, doing your own thing.
My name is Renee Borg, and I am a person who travels alone. I have been enjoying lone travel for over 15 years, visiting the Mediterranean, England, France, Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic, New York City, Quebec and various places around our own province of Ontario. I love to target a destination, craft my own itinerary, ferret out unusual, off-the-track spots to explore, savour incredible cuisines and lose myself in bookstores and farmer’s or artist’s markets. I don’t do tours, avoid chain-style hotels and shun tourist traps. I call these jaunts ‘my Fabulous Trips’ – and I have a complete blast!
At Our Age Travel has invited me as a guest blogger to share my experiences, address common misconceptions and fears, and dispel the notion that if you are travelling by yourself, you must be some sort of ‘lonely loser’. For those of you who have ever wondered if taking a trip on one’s own could be a doable option, I hope to persuade you that single travel is easy and fun to plan, safe and thoroughly enjoyable as you explore the world – or perhaps closer to home in this amazing country of ours – on your own terms and at your own speed. Watch for future posts on traveling solo and how you can also plan your own Fabulous Trips!

Some advantages to travelling solo:
- You can rise as early or late as you like
- You can linger at shops, museums, bookstores or try on shoes for as long as you desire
- You don’t have to deal with anyone’s baggage, or deal with their fears and foibles as you travel
- Attending theatre and concerts alone is often a bonus as you can pick up single, unsold seats cheap
- You can take as many bathroom breaks as you need to
- You can socialize and meet new people, or just keep to yourself and have a quiet, mindful trip
- You can change plans in a wink, revisit a favourite site or decide to skip it altogether if not in the mood
- You can finally go to that Dream Destination your partner or family member is not interested in and enjoy it at your leisure
- You can eat whatever and wherever you want ,whether trying out some bizarre new cuisine or just having pizza or potato chips in bed
- You can buy whatever you want
- You can explore being someone totally different than the ‘usual you’ : be bolder, more daring, more subdued and introspective, or more curious and fun-seeking
