Our Top 5 Reasons to Book an Inside Cabin

Posted on June 16, 2021

Just like most major cities right now, real estate on a cruise ship is at a premium.  As international travel looms closer folks are starting to book cruises and that means what may be reasonable pricing now will increase with demand.

We have always focused on ways to stretch our travel time and budget further.  When we booked our first cruise we asked for advice from seasoned cruisers as to the best stateroom option.  They delivered a wide range of responses, each valid but not conclusive.  As a result we went where we always go first, the most economical choice.  We have not waivered from that decision yet.

So here are our top 5 reasons why we still book an inside stateroom for our cruises;

  1. The most reasonable cost

A quick comparison found an ocean view state room was priced 20 to 45% higher than an inside and a balcony could range from 50% to over 200% more.  I can budget two or more cruises a year based on what I save on an inside cabin.  Not that there isn’t an appeal for that sun filled porthole and miniature balcony, but before you decide that the additional cost is reasonable read on.

  1. Every stateroom comes with the same ship wide amenities

No matter what you paid for your room each person aboard has access to the same dining and entertainment options, still has to fight for a lounge poolside and can participate in the same activities.

  1. Little time actually spent in your room

Few ever go on a cruise just to stay in their room all day.  It is the interaction with others, the excursions ashore and incredible sites that drive our itinerary choices, especially on Mediterranean and Northern European cruises.

  1. Best option if you are concerned with seasickness

As someone who can get woozy in the tub I was very concerned about getting seasick.  The best place to avoid as much motion as possible is low, inside and mid-ship.  High, forward or aft are where the most motion can be felt.  This may not make all the difference on rough seas but it will help to diminish the worst of the symptoms, along with a good anti-nausea medication.

  1. Best night’s sleep ever

Now it may be that we are very active all day, or it may be that we manage to have a nightcap or two before bed, but the quiet and dark of an inside cabin makes for the best sleep.  For some it may be too dark which is why we always carry a night light for the bathroom.  It is also important to know what is located above and below your room to ensure you are not sitting on top of the kitchen early in the morning or below the pulsing music from the night club after midnight.  Some folks also suggest keeping away from the noise of staircases or elevators. A review of the deck plan of your ship will address these concerns.

In the name of fairness, here are three reasons why you may not want an inside cabin.

  1. There are special privileges associated with suites

Most ships offer exclusive lounges for use by those in the suites and the concierge services will be appealing.  We met friends on a cruise that had booked a suite and they enjoyed room service for breakfast and a turn down service at night, treats delivered to their room daily and a special escort off the ship each morning to avoid the waiting crowds. They also had enough room to host a group for us for drinks one evening before dinner.

  1. If you suffer from any form of claustrophobia

Whereas seasickness is my affliction if you suffer from claustrophobia or are uncomfortable in dark or small spaces then going for a bright open space will be essential.

  1. When the length of your trip makes an inside suite unattractive

On shorter itineraries you will thrive being among people but even the most gregarious of us can have enough.  Being able to retreat to a quiet space all your own will be attractive.  Not to mention that post pandemic travel will be a different story and for a while cruisers will need the ability to withdrawal to a safe and private space.

Choosing a stateroom is a very personal choice that should reflect your travel goals and desired outcomes.  Shake it up at first and try different options until you settle on the one that is right for you.
